Days 1: Washington DC

We had our first full day in DC on Tuesday starting with a tour on Congress. We arranged a tour through our Representative and had a very nice but young tour guide (he had just graduated High School). After our tour we walked past the library of congress and over to the Supreme Court, where we sat in the court room for a brief lecture about the court. Nel took a little nap during this, but Chet seemed to enjoy it, especially when they said there were no requirements to becoming a Supreme Court Judge, meaning no previous experience necessary and no age requirements. After that it was off to grab a bite to eat and then we headed over to the Mall, where we checked out the Smithsonian Castle and the Hirshorn Museum. Katie had to find Claes Oldenburg's Geometric Mouse, Nel Joan Miro's Lunar Bird and Chet Barry Flanagan's The Drummer. I had read you should pick up a family guide at the museum and make a scavenger hunt out of it, only problem all the paintings in the guide where no longer on display, but the outside sculptures were. So we looked around a bit inside, where we saw a video installation that really captivated the kids, especially Chet then it was out the sculpture garden for our hunt. The kids had done a great job but at this point we were all tired of walking and ready to head back to the hotel.
